Make a complete book with hard covers and a stitched and covered spine, suitable for use as a sketchbook, notebook, diary or journal. Learn techniques for including storage pockets or envelopes, place markers and retaining ribbons for closure.

During this one day workshop participants will complete an A5 size book filled with drawing quality paper.

We will start the day with a short examination of various book structures, materials and tools.

Tools /Materials suggestion list

I will provide

pieces of thick greyboard for the covers

book cloth for the book spine

140gsm white acid free cartridge for the pages ( if you would prefer watercolour or another type of paper please contact me)

glue

thread

Please will you bring:

Essential tools- scissors- I use a big pair for cutting paper and a small pair for fiddly bits

a ruler – both for measuring and as a cutting edge

darning size needle

a paintbrush suitable for glueing

If you have one

a craft knife / stanley knife

board to cut on

a bradawl with a point and tools for making holes

wrapping papers for the book covers eg interesting paper bags, packaging, gift wrap, advertising flyers, pages from magazines..... etc

cords and ribbons

If you might like to add a 'tie' to close your book a ribbon piece approximately 1m in length and 1-2cm wide is required- I will bring a selection of ribbon but you might like to bring what you have.

embellishments eg lace, decorative pictures, fabric,beads, buttons, anything you think might be useful

Flying Fish- DIY craft kit

Having enjoyed a lot of success with my kits to make concertina books  over the last year it seemed a good time to expand my range and  put together another kit.
Paper flying fish first caught my attention as they caught the breeze outside a shop in Brighton Lanes. They were brightly coloured, printed in bold patterns and just right as decorations or for fun on a beach.
This is my version:

Each fish kit has four silkscreen printed sections- simply cut them out, stick them together, insert the plastic ring for the mouth,add the cord and your fish is ready to fly.

Fish Paper Commission

A couple of weeks ago I received a surprise email from Cornwall from a potential customer seeking some of my 'fish wrapping paper'.

 Usually I print my paper in multiple colour-ways, resulting with about six sheets ever being exactly the same.This creates lots of choice but a big problem when someone wants several matching sheets. Luckily, although I had completed a long print run just before christmas I had not stripped the screens - printing just a few sheets of paper would have been un-economical in time and materials. After a quick further exchange of emails we were able to establish the particular colour combination needed and I was quickly able to reproduce what was needed.

The paper was used to line a traditional dresser and now provides the perfect background to a collection of Cornishware with its distinctive banded blue and white design within a kitchen with a fish theme.

What a great way to use my paper- it looks fabulous.

Book Kits

Writing an article about using ribbons in book making earlier this year created much of the material necessary for a book kit. The "how to do it" part was almost complete- I just had to decide on packaging and contents.

Each kit contains paper to cover the book,ribbon, card , ready folded pages, and full directions to make the book

On the back of each pack is a sample of the paper and ribbon to be found inside and details of what the book will look like

This finished book has been used to display pictures that show silkscreen prints are created and the equipment used- very useful when explaining the process.
